First Lines Friday

I saw First Lines Friday last week on   Wandering Words blog. It seemed like fun and I totally want to join in.

Tank and I are reading Kingdom of Exiles: The Beast Charmer by Maxym M. Martineau. It is coming out on June 25th, 2019.

Here's the first few lines:

By the time evening fell, three things were certian: the gelatinous chunks of lamb were absolute shit, my beady-eyed client was hankering for more than the beasts in my possession, and someone was watching me.

Two out of the three were perfectly normal.

Sliding the meat to the side, I propped my elbows against the heavy plank table. My client lasted two seconds befor his gaze roved to the book-shaped locket dangling in my cleavage. Wedging his thick fingers between the collar of his dress tunic and his neck, he tugged gently on the fabric.

Book Blurb from Goodreads:

Fantastic Beasts meets Assassin's Creed in this epic, gripping fantasy romance from debut author Maxym M. Martineau.

Exiled beast charmer Leena Edenfrell is in deep trouble. Empty pockets forced her to sell her beloved magical beasts on the black market—an offense punishable by death—and now there's a price on her head. With the realm's most talented murderer-for-hire nipping at her heels, Leena makes him an offer he can't refuse: powerful mythical creatures in exchange for her life.

If only it were that simple. Unbeknownst to Leena, the undying ones are bound by magic to complete their contracts, and Noc cannot risk his brotherhood of assassins...not even to save the woman he can no longer live without.

So far it has been a riveting read. Stay tunned for the review coming up!

Book Review: Misadventures with a Book Boyfriend

Misadventures with a Book Boyfriend

Book Blurb From Goodreads:

A washed-up model at the age of 27, Oliver Connely has gone from being a household name to barely making the rent. It’s time to think fast—and cash in big—with a can’t-miss idea inspired by the passion he sees in a handful of romance novel fans. Book Boyfriend Incorporated is born.

Can’t. Miss.

Right?

Except for the unexpected glitches Oliver’s business plan doesn’t cover—like falling for one of his “lonely lady” clients, Bailey Hardin, a politician’s wife who’s as smart and loyal as she is beautiful and sexy. Their chemistry, instant and scorching, is already a problem—but when Bailey’s husband turns up dead, the pair quickly learns they’re facing more than a simple PR nightmare.

The mess intensifies when Oliver’s best friend decides to put a bid in for the freshly vacated city manager position, ensuring Oliver is now caught between his longtime best friend and his new ladylove. The clock is ticking, and the political scandal is growing. Tough decisions must be made—especially because, for the first time in Oliver’s life, matters of his heart are on the line.

Misadventures is a romantic series of spicy standalone novels, each written or co-written by some of the best names in romance. The stories are scandalous, refreshing, and, of course, incredibly sexy. They’re the perfect bedside read, a ‘quick blush’ for the reader who loves a page-turning romance.

Book Review:

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

I absolutely adored this book. Who doesn't wish that their book boyfriend would come to life? Isn't that why we read romance novels? To fall in love with the characters?

I found Oliver to be a likeable, relatable character, even if he is a little vain. But who hasn't reached that point in their life where they look in the mirror and wonder where their life has gone? Poor Oliver, an aged out model with no discernible life skills. Then when he comes up this idea to act as someone's book boyfriend to make money. I think the idea was brilliant. How fun would it be to meet the fictional men we dream of?  What could go wrong? Until he is smitten with a mysterious woman he can't get out of his mind. I thought it was fun to get the story from the man's point of view.

Reading this book was so enjoyable. The characters were fantastic. The storyline was riveting and it just drew me in.

Book Review:

I want to say that I DNF'ed this book. But that would be lying. I actually read the first half of the book and then skipped to the last 2 chapters to read the ending. To be honest. I just wanted to know if the story went somewhere without actually spending the whole time reading it.

This book was just not my cup of tea. I tried, I really did. I even read parts of it out loud to my hubby. (Not that he cared) I just couldn't get into the characters or the plotline. I felt that it was predictable and took forever to get somewhere. I really didn't like the characters. I thought Zane was not mysterious enough and Charolette was too whiny and needy. She was in her twenties. Not a child anymore!

I did like the ending. It wrapped up the story nicely and satisfied my need for a happy ending.

Book Review: Shadow Frost

Shadow Frost

Book blurb from Goodreads:

IN THE KINGDOM OF AXARIA, a darkness rises.

Some call it a monster, laying waste to the villagers and their homes.

Some say it is an invulnerable demon summoned from the deepest abysses of the Immortal Realm.

Many soldiers from the royal guard are sent out to hunt it down.

Not one has ever returned.

When Asterin Faelenhart, Princess of Axaria and heir to the throne, discovers that she may hold the key to defeating the mysterious demon terrorizing her kingdom, she vows not to rest until the beast is slain. With the help of her friends and the powers she wields—though has yet to fully understand—Asterin sets out to complete a single task. The task that countless, trained soldiers have failed.

To kill it.

But as they hunt for the demon, they unearth a plot to assassinate the Princess herself instead. Asterin and her friends begin to wonder how much of their lives have been lies, especially when they realize that the center of the web of deceit might very well be themselves. With no one else to turn to, they are forced to decide just how much they are willing to sacrifice to protect the only world they have ever known.

That is… if the demon doesn’t get to them first.

Book Review:

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

I received this ARC from Netgalley. This is my honest opinion.

Shadow Frost is one of the best books I have read this year.

The cover:
I found the cover beautiful. Honestly, it was one of the reasons that I requested this book from Netgalley. It's dramatic, it's simple, and it's elegant.

Characters:
Coco Ma created characters that are realistic. They have their good qualities and their bad. The protagonists are likeable in their own way. The antagonist is so evil it is delicious, but once I found out why she did what she did, my heart broke for The Woman. The author gave her characters trials that they had to overcome. She had them react in realistic ways that caused additional problems for the group of friends. Even though, they were just doing their best sometimes things happened. As it does in life.

The magic and world:
She made a very unique world. I thought it was really well done. It definitely helps to have a map at the beginning of the book. The magic is just great. I loved how she took the different elements into play. The magic was easy to follow and original.

Plot:
I was glued to my kindle and couldn't put it down. I had go pull an all nighter to finish it.  I really was sad that the story ended. The action moved along at a good pace and several plot twists were unexpected. A couple I guessed what was going on.

I loved this book. The only reason I am giving it a 4 star rating is that I found the ending bittersweet. I felt like there should be an epilogue or second book.

Synopsis:
After Wolf Manor, Fawn vowed to never be weak, broken, or scared again. She has wrenched her power from the Vultures, visiting them under the cover of darkness to deliver the same drug they’d given her. This version has a different side effect: death.
It doesn’t stop the nightmares, it can’t erase what happened, but revenge is the only distraction from Lyon Estate. Tucked in the wilderness, she draws back into herself until Master Lyon demands they make good on their deal. In order to continue her vengeance, he is to be her Owner—really this time.
While it is a small sacrifice to make, Fawn isn’t prepared to be pulled back into Elliot’s world, where the rules of the Order exist, but in a new way. Running from him sends her into the arms of others in House Chimera. People who should be off limits, but they also stir something within her wholly different than the emotions Master Lyon can conjure. Marius is patient, and she finds herself clinging to him more now than ever before. People like them don’t believe in love, but can they choose it?
Fawn is no longer the prey, but beyond the trees, a lone Wolf is hunting…

Bloom

Synopsis:
Given to The Grimm Order as an infant, Fawn was raised in a world shaped by the rich and powerful. When she was sold at the age of nine to a Suitor, Fawn believed he would protect her from the “Mainworld”, where those who know nothing about the Order live. Living with the cruel man who bought her freedom, she finds just what the Order is about: money, control, and status for the Owner and humiliation and abuse for those they own.
Unwilling to accept the expectations of being Owned, Fawn goes from golden girl to maid, content to live in the shadows of the Order as long as she isn’t Owned again.
It’s been ten years since she disgraced her former Owner’s name, and now the brooding Frenchman Elliot Lyon wants her. Master Lyon is kind, smart, and unlike any man she’s met. She doesn’t want to admit it to herself, but Fawn is drawn to him despite constantly planning her next escape.
Even the prettiest flowers have thorns, and Master Lyon is hiding secrets that will uproot everything she thinks she knows about him.

Release Date: June 30, 2018

Synopsis:
When she was sold to Master Elliot Lyon of House Chimera, Fawn could have never imagined he was the same person as Elliot, the man beneath a well placed mask. A victim. Just like her. She would have never thought he was grooming her for the Wolf she’d already escaped once. That he planned to deliver her to the beast’s jaws in exchange for his wife. Master Jรคger will stop at nothing to have her—even if that means using others as collateral. With more than just their lives on the line, Fawn must become someone else, and Master Lyon distances himself further from Elliot as her transfer looms.
The roots of the Order run deep within them, but Fawn is beginning to realize another bond has formed between her and her Owner, a man she vowed to destroy along with the rest of their tangled branches.
In a world where trust is just a tool and love isn’t meant for people like them, Fawn is determined to beat the powerful at their own elaborate games of make-believe. Even the man who Owns her.

Teaser from bonus material (This is a chapter from Chrysalis in Marius' POV)

He slid the glass to his side of the coffee table as he sat down on the other end of the sofa.
“We talked about this, mon coeur.”
My heart. He’d started to call me that when we were boys. I remembered the blood on my chest and how he’d sewn me back together.
“He’d said he’d rip out my heart if I didn’t obey.”
“You are my heart,” Marius whispered. “You must take care of it. What happens to you happens to me.”
Lifting the drink to his nose, Marius sniffed and grimaced. Yes, the very scent we often associated with the Vulture visiting our beds. “You don’t need to punish yourself, Elliot.”
Marius went as far as standing, setting the half empty glass on the bar cart.
But I did need to punish myself. I deserved so much more than the sting of memories. A need for something more substantial itched my spine, but satisfying any urge right now was out of the question.
“I can’t sleep.”
He wasn’t far, but I wanted to touch. I was selfish enough to crave this, yet I would not ask for it aloud.
“Because Fawn isn’t near you.” He phrased it as though he were finishing my sentence, not a question.
Folding my hands in my lap, I stared at the flames. “I wouldn’t ask that of her,” I said evenly. “I’m not a monster.”
My voice broke and it sent a wave of rage through me. Of course I was. I was no better than the disgusting man who had Owned us.
Marius moved an inch or two closer. “I know that. She knows that.”
